It was a tough job to treat this fragile, acid ridden, fractured support. The eyeglasses were easy enough to remove but the paper was too damaged to withstand surface cleaning. The overall discoloration was much reduced with successive controlled baths, and a lining of toned Japanese tissue and dilute wheat starch allowed the drawing to wrap around an acid-free board and obviated the need for filling and inpainting. The eyeglasses were reintroduced and secured on the verso with acid-free tape. The object can be now safely displayed in a vitrine.
